Sean Esbjörn-Hargens Ph.D. is an associate professor and founding Chair of the Integral Theory Program at John F. Kennedy University in Pleasant Hill, California. He is founding Director of the Integral Research Center, which supports graduate and post-graduate mixed methods research. In addition, he is the founding Executive Editor of the Journal of Integral Theory and Practice. Recently, he co-founded and co-organized the biennial Integral Theory Conference.

Sean is a leading scholar-practitioner in Integral Theory. He has worked cloesly with Ken Wilber for a decade operationalizing the integral (AQAL) model in multiple contexts. He is a founding member of Integral Institute and currently serves as their Vice President of Applications and Research. He is currently the most published author applying the integral model to a variety of topics: education, sustainable development, ecology, research, intersubjectivity, science and religion, consciousness studies, and play. His articles have appeared in academic journals such as the Journal of Consciousness Studies, World Futures, ReVision, and Journal of Humanistic Psychology. Sean co-edited Ken Wilber’s book The Simple Feeling of Being and has just completed writing a 800-page book with environmental philosopher Michael Zimmerman: Integral Ecology: Uniting Multiple Perspectives on the Natural World. Currently, he is working on a number of books including co-editing an anthology on Integral Education and editing an anthology on Integral Theory.

Sean has over twenty years of leadership experience always serving in multiple major roles simultaneously. His passion as a leader comes from his love of being alive, his commitment of looking directly at reality without blinking, and his desire to increase people’s experience of intimacy with Being. He is a practitioner within both Tibetan Buddhism (Shangpa Kagyu linage) and A. H. Almaas’ the Diamond Approach. He lives in Sebastopol, California on five-acres of redwoods with his wife and two daughters.

 An Embodiment of Integral Leadership

Sean has been a leader and a pioneer in Integral Studies in general and in Integral Theory in particular. To date he has accomplished the following:

  • Founding member of Integral Institute (I-I) and is currently the only member to have continually worked for I-I since its inception.
  • Has been a direct student of Ken Wilber's since 2000 receiving 1000s of hours of theoretical mentoring and guidance from him.
  • Was the first person in the world to get a PhD specializing in Integral Theory.
  • Founded and is the Executive Editor of Journal of Integral Theory and Practice
  • Founded and is Program Director of the on-line Certificate and Master of Arts in Integral Theory at John. F. Kennedy University.
  • Founded and is Program Coordinator of the on-line Certificate and Master of Arts track in Integral Studies at Fielding Graduate University.
  • Helped establish and served as the Program Director of the Master of Arts in Integral Psychology at John F. Kennedy University from 2002 - 2008.
  • Has secured $40,000 in annual funds for scholarships and research grants for Integral students.
  • Currently is one of the most published authors in Integral Theory with over two dozen articles, book chapters, and edited journals.
  • Co-authored Integral Ecology: Uniting Multiple Perspectives on Nature, the first academic textbook applying the Integral model to a field.
  • Has contributed to the development of Integral Theory through concepts such as "12 niches" and "Who x How x What."
  • Has designed and taught over 30 graduate level courses in Integral Theory in over a dozen areas at four different universities.
  • Has pioneered the fields of Integral Ecology and Integral Research and has made substantial contributions to Integral Education.
  • Played an instrumental role in establishing key partnerships for Integral Institute with Integral Coaching Canada, John F. Kennedy University, and Fielding Graduate University.
  • Was a Board Member of Teleosis, an Integral non-profit dedicated to green healthcare and environmental medicine from 2005 - 2008.
  • Has helped design and deliver nearly a dozen integral workshops and seminars.
  • Is a certified Integral Coach through Integral Coaching Canada (ICC) and training faculty for ICC's programs.
  • Is Integral Institute's Vice President of Research and Applications.

 

 Current Integral Projects

  • Is currently co-editing a pioneering volume on Integral Education with luminaries from traditional and alternative universities.
  • Is developing the Integral Research Center: a global resource for all individuals and organizations using Integral Methodological Pluralism for research.
  • Is developing the Integral Life Studio a resource center for practices to exercise body, mind, spirit, and shadow.
  • Co-Founded and is helping to organize the first Integral Theory Conference to be hosted at John F. Kennedy University biennially.
  • Is helping to launch the Integral Coaching Center at Integral institute and will serve as lead faculty.
  • Is helping to establish a low-residency Master of Arts in Integral Psychotherapy at John F. Kennedy University.
  • Is doing the groundwork to create a PhD. In Integral Theory at John F. Kennedy University in the next 5-10 years.
  • Is working with the State of the World Forum to design an integral experience for 2000 attendees and speakers to explore integral solutions to climate change.
  • Is on the Editorial Board of Integral Review.
  • Is designing an ambitious longitudinal Integral research project using six-different methods to assess the transformative power of the on-line curriculum in the MA in Integral Theory at John F. Kennedy University.
  • Is writing a major text book on Integral Theory as well as a number of other writing projects (books and articles).
  • Is trying to set up an a book series in Integral Theory with a major academic press
